ONPAR Math Test Overview

The ONPAR Math Items will reduce the language load of math test items without sacrificing content and cognitive complexity

WIDA will create items and tasks that are accessible to beginning ELLs and that offer response options that allow them to demonstrate academic achievement--not in spite of linguistic challenges, but because linguistic challenges have been either eliminated or significantly reduced due to the proposed test's innovative web-based format. Items will feature:

Different types of interaction
Animation
Audio and roll-over translations as audio-visual aids
De-emphasization of multiple-choice items

This assessment will be administered to elementary (grade 4) and middle (grade 7) school beginning ELLs.

In 2007, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), on behalf of WIDA, received an Enhanced Assessment Grant to develop ONPAR-Mathematics.

The ONPAR items are being developed to be equivalent to general multiple-choice and constructed-response math and science items, although different approaches are being used that more appropriately address the needs of the ELL population, while still measuring the same content and cognitive complexity targets.
